Mirissa Beach was not hit that badly when the Tsunami struck back in 2005 . Much of the infrastructure remained intact and the beach now has returned back to its beautiful self.
Most of the accommodation in Mirissa are centered in the middle of the beach so its best to use this area as a base and then if you are in a group have someone watch the bags while the others hunt for places to stay .

Mirissa is a small extremely popular beach town with a limited amount of places to stay so it fills up very fast. It is always best to make a reservation well ahead of time and then re-confirm especially during the busy season.
Guest houses and places to stay in Mirissa that are not directly on the beach or across the road are a lot cheaper . Hey but why come to the most beautiful beach in Sri Lanka and not stay on the beach ?.

The 2 most important things to remember are : book in advance and re-confirm.

 

 

Ocean Moon Guesthouse and Cabanas

“Wake up and smell the ocean″

Since people have started to come to Mirissa Beach, Ocean Moon Guest House in Mirissa Beach has always been a favourite place to stay in Mirissa . It’s a small family run Guest House that is noted for its friendliness and hospitality. All Travel Guides to Sri Lanka seem to recommend it as one of the top 3 places to stay in Mirissa. It is noted for its direct beach access, clean cabanas and seafood. Ocean Moon guesthouse in Mirissa fills up extremely fast and mostly by advanced reservation.

Sirri the owner is one of the most helpful people you will ever meet and both he and his staff will go out of their way to make your stay here memorable.

During the evening time his Friends and Family all drop by to chat to him and his wife and they are always interested in chatting to you.

Warning, come to Ocean Moon with a small child and you will quite possibly never see it for the whole time you are there . Both Sirri and his Wife love kids and Mrs Sirri owns the local sweet shop so the kids are always happy to see her as well.

Ocean Moon has no more than 10 Cabanas all with private en-suite bathrooms and balconies set in a tranquil garden like environment with direct access to the beach. All rooms are spotlessly clean and have fans, mosquito nets and come with fresh towels and sheets daily.
If you are lucky you might get one of the second story Cabanas facing the ocean with amazing sunset views but not if I get there ahead of you.

Have a meal in the small restaurant facing the ocean and listen to the waves crash or have it brought to your balcony where you can have a quiet moment alone with that someone special.

Ocean Moon has its own Tuk-Tuk and Sirri can sometimes pick you up from Welligama Train Station if you have a confirmed reservation. Keep in mind what was said previously about ass size, these tuk-tuks only can hold 2 Western people and their luggage and have no way to carry a surfbord.

Ocean Moon guest houses in Mirissa can also arrange a Taxi / Minibus service to the Airport or up to the Hill Country. One of his friends owns a Minibus and his rates are extremely reasonable. This driver can also act as a guide and take you to places like Kandy, Adams Peak and Haputale.

Sirri is about to invest in some bicycles so his guests can rent them for the day and head into the beautiful countryside across the read from the beach. There is a lovely lake, a snake farm, lush green rice paddies, loads of birds and in fact it’s a photographers dream. I was no more than 10 minutes away from the beach when I came across 3 wild peacocks just hanging out by the road. People will stop and stare at you as tourists rarely venture far from the beach. Trust me, this little day trip would be one of the highlights of your stay in Mirissa.
Bicycles are only available to Guests of Ocean Moon.

There is also talk of Sirri installing wireless internet ( WiFi ) for his guests in Ocean Moon. Internet cafes in Mirissa are limited but there is a great one across the road from Ocean Moon.
Speaking from experience, if you are bringing a laptop to Sri Lanka you have to bring a plastic airtight bag to keep it in. Ziplock make some large freezer storage bags that are ideal for this. The air on or near the beach is full of salt and in the Hill Country the air is damp, neither environments are good for a PC these days. Also bring packets of Silica Jell with you and when you are not using your computer, camera or Ipod store them in this bag.

International calls can be made and received at reception.
Internet access + wifi available in the restaurant and some rooms by March 2010.
Valuables can be safely stored with Sirri.
Payment by cash only – Euro and USD also accepted.
Nearest Bank / ATM is in 25 minutes away in Matara .( Commercial Bank )
Pharmacy and a Local Doctor nearby.
Great little shop that sells everything is across the road.
Bicycle rental for Guests.

Surf Sea Breeze Restaurant and Cabanas

In the corner of Mirissa Beach beside the surfing Beach

With its own beautiful garden and great restaurant , surf Sea Breeze had 8+ nice clean new bungalows all facing the ocean. All the rooms have tiled floors and have en-suite bathrooms, mozzy nets and fans.
Each Bungalow has a full sized bed and comes with sheets and towels daily.

It is located on the far Western end of the beach where the large surf breaks and is accessable from the beach and the interior road. Its an ideal guesthouse in Mirissa to stay if you want to go surfing in Mirissa.

Surf Sea Breeze is one of the newer Guest Houses / Restaurants to the scene but already it is getting great reviews on line .

The owner is a guy called John Sunil and both he and his Wife are from Mirissa and are extremely friendly, speak perfect English and will go out of their way to make you stay there a happy one. They have both lived in Canada for many years and are extremely familiar with the needs and expectations of tourists. Standards are high here and this draws a lot of repeat business.

If your passion is fishing or you have any interest in the commercial side of things , talk to John as he owns a large boat that is usually out catching fish near the Maldives. John can arrange boat trips and rental in the area for you.
